AIDS was first identified in the
United States in 1981. The disease has now spread to every part of the U.S. and no sector of society has escaped its wrath.

Experts believe more than one-million people in the U.S. are living with HIV.

More than 500-thousand have died after developing AIDS.

The CDC estimates that of the adults and adolescents with AIDS, 77% are men.  Of these men,

  • 58% were men who had sex with men

  • 21% were injection drug users

  • 11% were exposed through heterosexual contact

  • 8% were men who had sex with men and were injection drug users

Of the adult and adolescent women with AIDS,

  • 64% were exposed through heterosexual contact

  • 34% were exposed through injection drug use

Of the almost four-thousand children living with AIDS,

  • 97% probably acquired the infection from their mother
